The brainchild of Jim Malcolmson
The idea of improving the health and well-being of men in Scotland hatched while he was living abroad in Australia where he worked with a range of male health projects.
Jim came back to Scotland for family reasons and after a few months’ discussions had started between him and a mate about the gap in services for men and this led to Jim establishing MENSELF + as a social enterprise using a programme called “PIT STOP” which he brought back from Australia.
After consulting with over 150 men, the name was quickly re-named MOT 4 MEN, and in the coming years, it has been developed significantly and has recorded over 5,000 participants, male and female, in Scotland.
The success with this programme has enabled MENSELF +’s development. They now operate from the East End of GLASGOW, Jim’s birthplace. Now in 2025, after global crisis after crisis, MENSELF + has transitioned into a Charity where they deliver a wide range of support services for males and females.
MENSELF + travel all over Scotland and will consider any event.
All of our activities focus on improving the quality of people’s lives by challenging isolation, loneliness, cost of living related issues as well as the associated physical and mental health concerns.
We have certainly come a long way since our inception in 2015 and we fully promote and practice community involvement at all levels within our organisation. This is evident in our Advisory Group which consists of members from all of our groups.

I worked for over 30 years in community settings before starting MENSELF + and this experience has enabled me to move in a direction where I felt was necessary as I feel that community work is deep rooted in providing some of the answers to population health and wellbeing as all of the solutions and funding cannot be met within the NHS or other health organisations alone as they are always stretched as it is, therefore there is always a role for organisations like ourselves to play.

Men have a tendency to pay less attention to their own health, whether it be mental or physical. I think that it’s important that there are people and organisations out there that can help men to open up a bit more, and in a way get rid of the stigma towards men not being able to show emotions or to get themselves checked out.
